How to Clean your Awning

Published

Ah, the awning. That trusty outdoor companion that shields you from the blazing sun or the occasional drizzle. You know, the one that elevates your outdoor space from "meh" to "wow!" But as with anything that lives outside, your awning doesn't stay pristine on its own.

Over time, dirt, grime, pollen, and those mysterious substances from the sky (bird droppings, we’re looking at you) can make your once-bright awning look more like an eyesore than an asset.

Don’t worry! Keeping your awning clean doesn’t have to be a chore that requires a PhD in fabric care. With a few simple steps and some elbow grease, you can have that awning looking brand new in no time. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Before you start, you’ll need to gather a few essential tools.

What you need is:

A broom or a soft-bristled brush

A bucket

Mild dish soap

Warm water

A hose or a sponge

Step 2: Brush Off the Dust & Debris

Like any good cleaning session, you have to start with the basics. Grab your broom or brush and gently sweep off any dust, leaves, or other debris from the surface of your awning. This step is crucial because you don’t want to grind dirt into the fabric with your cleaning solution. Also, it’ll make you feel like a professional who knows what they’re doing, so go ahead and channel your inner cleaning guru.

Step 3: Create Your Cleaning Solution

Now, let’s talk cleaning. Mix up a solution using warm water and a tiny bit of mild dish soap—think about a tablespoon for every gallon of water. You don’t need to turn your awning into a bubble bath (unless that’s your thing, but let’s stay on track here).

Once your solution is ready, dip your sponge into the water and wring it out. You want it damp, not sopping wet, because too much water can damage the fabric over time.

Step 4: Scrub a Dub Dub

Gently scrub the awning in circular motions. Think of it like giving your awning a little spa treatment, but without the fancy oils and cucumber slices. Focus on any spots or stains, but don’t be too rough. Patience is key here.

If you encounter any particularly stubborn stains, consider making a paste with baking soda and water. Gently apply it to the stain, let it sit for about 10 minutes, and then scrub away. Voila! It’s like magic, but real.

Step 5: Rinse, Don’t Drench

Once you’ve scrubbed every inch of your awning (or at least the parts you can reach), it’s time to rinse. Grab the hose or a clean sponge, dip it into fresh water, and rinse off the soap. Be thorough, but don’t flood your awning. You’re not trying to create a water park in your backyard (unless you are, in which case, carry on).

Step 6: Let It Dry (Patience Is a Virtue)

Now comes the hardest part—waiting. Once you've rinsed off the cleaning solution, let your awning dry. Avoid using a high heat source, like a hairdryer or heater, to speed up the process. Your awning deserves a little TLC, so let it air dry naturally, preferably in a shaded area where it won’t get hit by direct sunlight while wet. It’s the awning’s version of a leisurely Sunday afternoon nap.

Pro Tips to Keep It Fresh:

Clean Regularly: Aim for a quick sweep every few weeks, even if you don’t think it’s dirty. It helps keep the grime from building up.

Protective Cover: If you live in an area prone to heavy rain or bird traffic, consider investing in a cover for the awning when it's not in use.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: While bleach may seem like an easy fix, it can deteriorate the fabric over time. Stick to mild soap and water, and your awning will thank you.

Inspect Often: Check your awning for any wear and tear regularly. If you spot any holes or damage, get them repaired before they get worse.

Final Thoughts

Keeping your awning clean doesn’t have to be a full-blown, all-day event. A little regular maintenance goes a long way in extending its lifespan and keeping your outdoor space looking sharp. So, put down the pizza box, grab your broom, and let your awning bask in the glory of its newfound cleanliness. After all, it's the little things that make your home look truly spectacular—like an awning that actually looks as good as the day you got it!

Happy cleaning!
